LAB13 (Cytology Request)

Collect

  • Instruct patient to deposit specimen coughed up from bronchial tree ('deep cough specimen') into collection container. Add 50% ethyl alcohol, and indicate that alcohol was added. Specimen should not be saliva from mouth or nasal secretions.
  • Label specimen container with two patient identifiers (patient name, DOB, and/or MRN), collection date/time, and specimen site/source.
  • Specimen must be accompanied by a printed EPIC Order (or completed Cytology Request for non-EPIC clinics) including two patient identifiers (patient name, DOB, and/or MRN),  collection date/time, pertinent patient history, performing physician, and specimen site/source.

NOTE: If fungus is suspected, indicate request for PAS/GMS stain on the Cytology Request.

Room temperature after adding 50% ethyl alcohol

Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Reported/Turnaround Time

Results are sent within 2 working days after specimen is received.

NOTE: Results may be delayed:

  • If pertinent and/or required information is conflicting or missing.
  • PAS/GMS stains are performed.
