Collect

  • Fresh and send in an enclosed container to prevent drying out with a slightly moistened saline gauze wrapped around specimen.
  • Label specimen container with two patient identifiers (patient name, DOB, and/or MRN), collection date/time, and specimen site/source).
  • Specimen must be accompanied by an EPIC ORDER or completed Surgical Pathology Request including two patient identifiers (patient name, DOB, and/or MRN), collection date/time, pertinent patient history, performing physician, and specimen site/source.

Unacceptable

  • Submerge the sample in saline as this will cause a swelling artifact.
  • Let the sample dry out which will cause enzyme activity to be lost.
  • Schedule muscle biopsies on a Thursday or Friday.
  • Do not use clamps.

Results are reported by UW Madison Laboratories within 10-14 working days of receipt.
